On the whole your Immune System does a remarkable job of defending you against foreign and invading micro organisms. However, when your immune system is compromised and it doesn't have the right 'tools' it needs to fight of the threat, you get more sick.

Your Immune System is a constant evolving system that learns after every threat it has killed. In fact it does more everyday to keep you alive than you realise. t is the true unsung hero of the body.

The Vitamin C Myth

  • Contrary to popular belief, Vitamin C may not be as useful in avoiding the common cold as previously thought. Yes taking it on a regular basis helps the body, but blasting the body with Vitamin C when you feel a cold coming on will only result in your money being flushed down the toilet, literally!
  • Citrus is the best source of Vitamin C. While a glass of orange juice certainly has lots of Vitamin C in it, a raw red bell pepper the size of tennis ball packs about 200-300 mg of Vitamin C, approximately 100 mg more than a glass of orange juice.
  • Low levels of Vitamin C have been linked to a higher BMI and waist ratio, so ensure you have a colourful plate full of different vegetables to get the best natural Vitamin C you can.

Supplements

  • Not all Multivitamin supplements are the same. They can be combinations of one-a-day types, B-Complexes and anti-oxidant types to name a few. Find out which ones you need and if possible get ones that you need for the ones your are deficient in. For example, don't take a multivitamin if all you are deficient in is Vitamin D. Take a good quality fat soluble Vitamin D supplement.
  • Always buy supplement products that are certified and sealed. Avoid buying supplements from sites on the internet that advertise them for cheap. Go speak to a health professional like me for brands that use safe and sustainable ingredients and have no artificial fillers or additives in the supplements. 
  • Supplements are not replacement for food! The name says it all, they are supposed to supplement you until you get to the level of the desired vitamin/mineral levels required. They are not meant to be taken long-term unless you're chronically unwell.
